Carbon Reduction

With the world’s leading economies on the fast track to a low carbon future, it’s our role to help our clients understand and prepare for the crucial role of delivering infrastructure in a carbon conscious world.

Our carbon critical programme and tools

We began our carbon critical design awareness programme in 2008 with two aims: to encourage senior managers to engage their teams in the role engineers will have to play to deliver a low carbon economy, and to promote the transfer of knowledge within the business.

Building on that activity we are now focussing on improving levels of client engagement and to this end have invested more than £1m in the development of a suite of carbon tools to help organisations make decisions on how to reduce carbon.

In May 2010, our chief executive, Keith Clarke began his term as the Institution of Civil Engineers’ Brunel lecturer for 2010/11. His lecture, titled ‘Delivery of a low carbon society: beyond rhetoric’, considers what steps the engineering profession needs to take to implement a low carbon society.

Being carbon critical in our own operations

Not only are we engaging with our clients and peers to help reduce carbon, it is also important that we are carbon critical in our own operations and performance. We report on energy consumption and business travel for our operations in China, Europe, Middle East, UK and USA.

In the news section you can read about the activities we’ve undertaken on our journey to becoming carbon critical.
