Energy
The UK energy market is changing fast as the last three decades characterised by cheap coal, plentiful nuclear generation and North Sea gas and oil give way to issues of climate change, sustainability & energy security. Atkins is engaged in, and actively growing our capability for, all aspects of the developing energy market.
In electricity generation we are helping both conventional and nuclear sectors maintain output and extend the life of assets, and we’re engaged in planning and enabling the next generation of nuclear power stations.
We have a long history supporting electricity transmission and distribution in the UK, providing design services and turnkey projects to upgrade and replace aging infrastructure and to provide new connections for ‘local’ generation schemes.
The clean-up of the UK nuclear industry is underway with the formation of the Nuclear Decommissioning Agency, and Atkins has a significant presence in clean-up work at many of the UK’s nuclear sites. We also support regulators develop policy and process.
Carbon reduction is vitally important in responding to threat of climate change, and we play a leading role managing programmes on behalf of the Carbon Trust. We also provide consultancy services to the energy efficiency and renewable markets, ranging from schools awareness programmes to biomass & wind power developments.
